Book Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why Review :

It appears I am in the minority. I found the book a meandering mix of pseudopsychology, attempts at philosophy aping “Zen and the Art...”, and self-aggrandizement. For a truly well-written and unflinchingly rational examination of survival and tragedy, read William Langewiesche.
I appreciated many of the anecdotes in this collection. People who explore the backcountry and/or read books on the topic will already be familiar with some of these stories but I doubt anybody is going to have heard all of them. Gonzalez devotes an entire chapter to summarizing “Touching the Void,” about the Simpson/Yates descent from Siula Grande. If you have any interest in this book, go ahead and read that one first, it’s an absolute classic. The book reaches some potentially useful conclusions about the steps one can take before entering into a risky environment, and about the personality characteristics that can help somebody survive if things go south. But otherwise, I’m not a fan for four reasons:1. it’s repetitive and disorganized. Gonzalez wanted to tell some stories, and I guess an editor forced him to try to find a through line, but it doesn’t seem to come naturally to him. The stories are in essentially random order, and even in the appendix, Gonzalez provides not one but two differing sets of conclusions.2. misuse of science. Gonzalez has heard about chaos theory and like to drop the term a lot. The things he’s describing are not chaos theory.3. business stretch is bizarre, describing the failures of old technology and industrial companies as though they could be explained by the same factors that cause failure to survive after plane crashes.4. self-praise. This is the big one. Gonzalez can’t let a chapter go by without telling us about his own skills and, especially, about other people praising his skills. The episode with the survival instructor praising him for his ability to start a fire with wet wood had me particularly rolling my eyes.Anyway, three stars as a collection of disaster stories. If you like this stuff, get yourself Accidents in North American Mountaineering (it’s published annually), plus Into the Void if you haven’t already read it. Two stars because of the Laurence Gonzalez back-patting.
